Gallows Hill Artist Studios Salem: Local Art & Gifts MA
Step into Salem’s creative heart at Gallows Hill Artist Studios, the city’s first dedicated artist studio collective located at 16 Proctor Street. Founded in 2022 by photographer and arts advocate James Bostick, this 6,000-square-foot workspace brings together twelve talented resident artists working across diverse mediums including photography, painting, illustration, printmaking, glass arts, jewelry, and wearable art. Housed in a historic warehouse building that served as the Arthur J. Mulholland Company tannery around 1900—one of the few structures to survive Salem’s devastating 1914 fire—the studios feature striking original post-and-beam architecture and overlook the poignant site of Proctor’s Ledge, where Salem’s 1692 witch trial victims were hanged.
Holiday Art Market & Special Events
While the studios typically serve as private creative workspaces for resident artists, Gallows Hill opens its doors for special public events throughout the year. The annual Holiday Art Market, held in mid-December, offers an exceptional opportunity to shop directly from local artists, explore working studios, and discover one-of-a-kind gifts. Featured artists include James Bostick’s evocative photography and Salem Arcanum Tarot project; David Burr’s compelling paintings; Carol Cross’s exquisite glass art; E.B. Goodale’s illustration and printmaking; Dale Ducillo Lewinski’s jewelry and paintings; Linda Mullen’s wearable art and immersive environments; and works from Jessica Murdock, Katherine Miura, Joey Higgins, CJ Karch, and Laurel Driskill. Guest artists also join for special holiday showcases.
Artistic Community & Legacy
Bostick recognized Salem’s critical need for affordable artist studio space and transformed his photography workspace into this thriving community hub. A Massachusetts Cultural Council grant recipient and active leader in Salem’s arts scene through his involvement with Salem Arts Association, Salem Public Art Commission, and Destination Salem, Bostick embodies the collaborative spirit that defines Gallows Hill. His philosophy—”Alone we struggle, but as a collective, we thrive”—guides the studio’s mission to foster individual creativity while building a supportive artistic community. The space features individual studios, exhibition areas, shared common spaces, and rotating gallery displays showcasing resident artists’ work.
